This same whole-body approach can also be seen in our work with acupuncture and Chinese massage for lower back pain, where the location of pain is only one part of the clinical picture.

Why Is Heel Pain Often Worse in the Morning?

The plantar fascia runs from the heel bone toward the toes and helps support the arch of the foot. When this tissue becomes repeatedly overloaded, small-scale irritation and structural changes can develop.

During the night, your foot remains relatively inactive. When you suddenly place weight on it in the morning, the plantar fascia is stretched again. This is why the first-step pain after getting out of bed is such a characteristic symptom.

Typical symptoms include:

  • ⚡ Sharp or stabbing pain underneath the heel
  • 👣 Pain during the first steps in the morning
  • 🪑 Pain after standing up following prolonged sitting
  • 🚶 Temporary improvement after walking for a short period
  • 🏃 Increased discomfort after running or long periods of standing
  • 🦶 Tenderness around the bottom or inner side of the heel

Plantar fasciitis can be associated with sudden increases in activity, prolonged standing, running, limited ankle mobility, footwear, body weight and changes in the way forces pass through the foot.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis and Who Is More Likely to Develop It?

Common contributing factors include:

FactorHow It May Affect the Heel
Long periods of standingRepeated load on the plantar fascia
Sudden increase in exerciseTissue may not adapt quickly enough
Tight calf musclesCan affect ankle and foot mechanics
Running or jumpingCreates repeated loading of the heel
Unsupportive footwearMay change pressure distribution
Reduced ankle mobilityCan increase compensatory stress
Excess body weightIncreases mechanical load on the foot

The foot also does not function independently from the rest of the body. Tightness or altered movement in the calves, knees, hips and lower back may influence how you walk.

This is one reason we often assess broader muscular patterns in our TCM-practice in Frederiksberg. For example, someone who has heel pain together with back or leg tension may benefit from looking beyond the painful heel itself, just as our approach to massage and moxibustion for overuse-related back pain considers both local symptoms and the surrounding muscular pattern.

Can Acupuncture Help Plantar Fasciitis and Heel Pain?

Acupuncture is sometimes used as a complementary treatment for plantar heel pain.

Treatment normally involves inserting very fine needles into selected local or distal acupuncture points. The exact point selection varies according to symptoms, tenderness and the practitioner’s assessment.

Research on acupuncture for plantar fasciitis is encouraging but should not be overstated. Earlier systematic reviews found evidence of short-term pain reduction, while also noting that the number and quality of studies were limited. A 2026 randomized trial in people with chronic, difficult-to-treat plantar fasciitis found a higher proportion of patients achieving meaningful pain reduction with acupuncture than with a wait-list control, with benefits continuing during follow-up. More research is still needed to establish how acupuncture compares with other treatments over the longer term.

For this reason, we view acupuncture as one possible part of a broader treatment plan, rather than a guaranteed cure.

At our acupuncture clinic in Frederiksberg, treatment may also take into account calf tension, lower-leg discomfort and other areas of muscular overload. This is similar to the individualized approach we use when combining acupuncture and massage for musculoskeletal pain, rather than using exactly the same treatment protocol for every patient.

How Does Traditional Chinese Medicine View Chronic Heel Pain?

Traditional Chinese medicine uses a different conceptual framework from modern anatomy.

In TCM, persistent pain may be described in terms of disrupted movement of Qi and Blood through the meridians. Treatment therefore may include a combination of local acupuncture points and points located elsewhere in the body.

A practitioner may consider questions such as:

  • Is the pain sharp or dull?
  • Does warmth make it feel better?
  • Is the heel stiff mainly in the morning?
  • Does prolonged walking aggravate the pain?
  • Are the calves unusually tight?
  • Are there other areas of chronic pain?
  • Is fatigue or poor recovery also present?

These questions help guide an individualized treatment strategy.

Depending on the presentation, acupuncture may also be combined with massage, cupping or, in selected cases, moxibustion. Our clinic already uses these methods across a range of pain presentations, and the principles behind combining techniques are discussed in our article about choosing between acupuncture and massage.

What Can You Do at Home to Help Plantar Fasciitis Recover?

For many people, conservative management may include:

👣 Gentle plantar fascia stretching
Stretching the bottom of the foot before the first steps in the morning may help reduce stiffness.

🦵 Calf stretching
Limited calf flexibility can influence foot mechanics, so gentle calf stretching is commonly included in rehabilitation.

👟 Appropriate footwear
Shoes with reasonable support and cushioning may be more comfortable than repeatedly walking barefoot on hard floors.

📉 Temporarily reducing aggravating activity
You may not need complete rest, but temporarily reducing running, jumping or prolonged standing can give irritated tissue time to recover.

🏃 Gradually rebuilding activity
Once symptoms settle, activity should normally increase progressively rather than suddenly returning to the previous training level.

Current research across conservative plantar-fasciitis treatments suggests that several interventions can help with short-term pain, although results vary and no single therapy is universally best.

If you also have recurrent tension elsewhere in the body, treating the entire movement pattern may make sense. Patients with heel discomfort who also experience neck, back or muscular tension can explore our broader approach to acupuncture, massage and pain management as part of understanding how different areas of the body can contribute to persistent discomfort.

When Should You Get Professional Help for Heel Pain?

Mild plantar fasciitis often improves with conservative care, but you should not ignore persistent pain.

Consider professional assessment if your heel pain:

  • ⚠️ continues for several weeks
  • ⚠️ becomes progressively worse
  • ⚠️ makes normal walking difficult
  • ⚠️ appears after an injury
  • ⚠️ is accompanied by swelling or redness
  • ⚠️ causes numbness, burning or tingling
  • ⚠️ occurs even when you are resting
  • ⚠️ affects both feet without a clear reason

People with diabetes, impaired circulation or neurological conditions should be particularly cautious about new or persistent foot pain.

If you would like to explore whether acupuncture is suitable for your symptoms, our free initial consultation allows us to discuss where the pain is located, how long it has been present and which activities make it worse before deciding on an appropriate approach. Our clinic is located at Borups Allé 131 st. tv., 2000 Frederiksberg, and appointments can also be arranged directly through our online booking page.

How do I know if my heel pain is plantar fasciitis?

A typical sign is pain underneath or toward the inner heel that is particularly strong during your first steps after waking up or after sitting for a long time. However, other conditions can cause similar pain, so persistent symptoms should be assessed professionally.

How long does plantar fasciitis take to heal?

Recovery varies considerably. Mild cases may improve relatively quickly when the aggravating load is reduced, while long-standing plantar fasciitis can take several months. The duration depends on activity level, tissue irritation, footwear, underlying health and how consistently contributing factors are addressed.

How many acupuncture sessions are needed for plantar fasciitis?

There is no universal number. Treatment frequency depends on how long you have had the condition, the severity of the pain and your response to treatment. A responsible practitioner should reassess progress rather than promise a fixed number of sessions.
